Every so often a group appears that not only becomes popular, but changes the soundscape of music – they influence others and spawn imitators. They’re rare, like diamonds in the rough.
Los Pikadientes de Caborca are exactly that…a direct and fresh group from the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora. They were signed by Sony Music in 2008.
The five young guys in this group are full of charisma and talent.
Francisco Rafael González Terrazas, the lead singer, is 26. He also writes most of Los Pikadientes de Caborca’s songs.
Ezequiel “El Primo” Olivares Ramos, on clarinet, is 18. He’s the newest member of the group, having replaced Jorge Mario “El Chino” Gastélum, who is pursuing other projects.
Daniel Méndez Garibay is 25 and plays alto sax.
Jesús Aurelio “El Chalomo” Arza Mercado is 19 and plays tuba.
Jesiel Arturo Zubia Ballesteros is 20 and plays guitar.
All five are natives of Caborca, Sonora (pop. 52,330), and previously belonged to Banda Auténtica Tierra Nueva.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
The founding of Los Pikadientes de Caborca was completely natural and simple, just like the easygoing and fun personalities of the musicians. Around early 2006, Francisco and Jorge Mario were in a band and after their show, they’d hang out, drink some beers, and tinker with their instruments.
Over time, Daniel, Jesús Aurelio and Jesiel joined in. Just to spend some quality time together playing, drinking and having fun.
But one fine day, after having some laughs with his friends, Francisco got the idea to write “La Cumbia del Río.” They had no idea that he was writing what would become one of the biggest hits of 2008, or that it was the song that in no time would make them famous.
“I came up with that song,” Francisco says modestly, “and suddently everyone in the area had it as a ringtone. People started requesting it from radio stations, and many groups started covering it.”
“But it’s my song,” he adds with a chuckle.
Shortly after that, the group’s manager got a call. It was Sony Music, offering a contract. The boys couldn’t believe it.
The name of the group, Los Pikadientes, comes from a slang term in Caborca that refers to guys who open one beer after another, and can’t stop. Spelling the word with a “k” was just for fun.
AND SUCCESS ARRIVED…
In August 2008, Vámonos pa’l Río (Let’s Go to the River) hit stores. It was their debut album on Sony Music. With 12 tracks, mostly originals by Francisco, this album included “La Cumbia del Río,” which was without a doubt the Regional Mexican song of 2008.
Vámonos pa’l Ríosold 200,000 units, becoming the top-selling Latin debut album of 2008 and reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart.
And the single “La Cumbia del Río” spent six consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Regional Mexican radio, while selling over 250,000 ringtones.
These impressive accomplishments brought Los Pikadientes de Caborca to the attention of the creative team (Huevo Cartoon) for the animated Mexican movie Otra Película de Huevos y un Pollo, for which they recorded the prominently featured song “Al Gusto.”
These successes also earned the group nominations for the Grammy, for Univision’s Premio Lo Nuestro, six Billboard Latin Music Awards, and Premios de la Radio.
THEIR NEW MATERIAL
This year Los Pikadientes de Caborca return with fans wondering what they’ll come up with next. And what they’ve created is big.
La Tenía Más Grande(His Was Bigger)is the sly title of the group’s new single and album. The album went to retail in August.
As a tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, the group is also releasing its version of “Billie Jean,” as Los Pikadientes de Caborca pay homage to one of the all-time greats.
Both songs are already receiving adds at Latin radio stations in the United States.
Cada cierto tiempo aparece en la escena musical un artista o un grupo realmente auténtico y diferente… Son como diamantes que están ahí para ser pulidos, pero son verdaderamente escasos.
Los Pikadientes de Caborca son justamente eso… Un grupo sincero y fresco originario del estado mexicano de Sonora, recientemente firmado por Sony BMG.
Cinco son sus integrantes. Todos a cual más de jóvenes y talentosos:
Francisco Rafael González Terrazas tiene 25 años de edad. Es la voz del grupo y
es también el compositor de la gran mayoría de los temas de Los Pikadientes
de Caborca.
Jorge Mario Gastélum tiene 21 años y toca el clarinete.
Daniel Méndez Garibay tiene 24 años y toca el saxofón alto.
Jesús Aurelio Arza Mercado, conocido cariñosamente como “Chalomo”, tiene 18
años y toca la tuba.
Jesiel Arturo Zubia Ballesteros tiene 19 años y toca la guitarra.
Los cinco son de Caborca, Sonora y eran integrantes de la Banda Auténtica Tierra Nueva.
El origen de Los Pikadientes de Caborca es muy natural y sencillo, como lo son sus integrantes… Hace unos dos años y medio, cuando terminaban de tocar con la banda, Francisco y Jorge Mario se iban por ahí a echarse unas cervezas y a tocar, sólo por divertirse.
Luego se les fueron uniendo Daniel, Jesús Aurelio y Jesiel… Lo hacían por tocar, por pistear y divertirse.
Pero un buen día de ésos –así nada más, como jugando– a Francisco se le ocurrió componer “La Cumbia del Río”. Qué ajeno estaba del éxito y la penetración popular que aquel tema tendría…
“Yo inventé esa canción” –dice con modestia su autor– “y de repente todo mundo la traía en su celular; la gente pedía la canción en las radiodifusoras, y muchos grupos la empezaron a tocar, pero yo fui el que la inventé”, y se ríe…
Algunos meses después de aquello, un día sonó el teléfono del dueño de la banda. Le llamaban de Sony BMG para ofrecerles firmar un contrato con ellos. Los muchachos no lo podían creer.
El nombre del grupo, Los Pikadientes, es porque en Caborca –su pueblo natal– le llaman así a los que abren un bote de cerveza, y otro, y otro más… y después ya no pueden parar. Lo de escribirlo con ‘k’, fue por pura puntada…
A fines del mes de agosto saldrá a la venta su primer disco titulado “Vamonos Pa’s Rio”. Una producción con doce temas, la mayoría son temas originales del grupo, producto de la inspiración de Francisco González Terrazas.
“Nos gusta que las canciones tengan algo de buen humor. Nuestras rolas son para pisteadores…” – afirma con naturalidad Francisco.
Su disco saldrá primero en los Estados Unidos y después en México. Ellos, Los Pikadientes de Caborca, están muy contentos con todo lo que les está pasando. ¿Y cómo no iba a ser así? Cuando lo único que ellos desean, su mayor aspiración, es que los vaya a ver mucha gente cuando tocan, se diviertan, y les aplaudan…
