Jesús Alfredo Rodríguez Hernández is known as El Compa Chuy. El Compa means “your homeboy” and that’s what he is for his friends and admirers in Sinaloa…a true homeboy!

Recently signed to Sony Music, El Compa Chuy has very quickly gone from being a regional phenomenon to topping airplay charts across Mexico and the U.S., thanks to his iconic hit “El Katch.” The first single from El Niño de Oro (The Golden Boy), his second album on Sony Music, “El Katch” is a true phenomenon of Sierreño music, with its lyrics about a guy who knows how to live the good life.
The musical and artistic talent of El Compa Chuy comes from his family. His great-grandfather on his father’s side played accordion in the Sierras of Durango. And his father and several of his uncles were “weekend warriors” who played music at local parties.
“I remember being just 4 or 5 years old and listening to corridos at home. I loved to sing, but I was shy. I was embarrassed if anyone saw me and heard me singing,” El Compa Chuy says with a chuckle.
When he was 14, Chuy became a small businessman, buying a sound system that he rented out for parties. It turned out to be a great way for him to get to know the players on the Culiacán artistic scene.
“One day a group rented my equipment for a rehearsal. But they could only practice the instrumentation because the singer hadn’t arrived. I was hanging around, singing the songs softly. The musicians heard me and asked me if I could fill in on vocals for their rehearsal. That’s how my singing career began.”
Over the next seven years, El Compa Chuy made a local name for himself as the vocalist of two groups in Culiacán. Chuy had to be resolute, especially early on – his parents believed he was too young to be singing at nightspots. “During that time I completely lost my childhood shyness about singing,” he says.
At age 21, Chuy left Sinaloa and made his way to California, where he worked in a squid cannery. Later he moved to Phoenix and worked at a car wash.
One day, with encouragement from relatives, he hopped on stage at an open mic event taking place at one of the city’s biggest flea markets. In attendance was a man who directed a musical group. After Chuy sang, the man invited him to sing for the band’s gig that same night. He accepted, but he never sang with them. Earlier, he had run into a couple of guys who invited him to join them in a Sierreño-music group.
It’s clear that it was El Compa Chuy’s lucky day.
Hard to believe that all that happened in 2005 – not too long ago. Since then, the artistic career of El Compa Chuy has been accelerating. And he raced into the lead with his smash hit “El Katch,” which reached the Top 10 on national Regional Mexican charts.
In March 2009, the release of El Niño de Oro, his second album on Sony Music, was announced. This is the album that features “El Katch.” On July 29, 2009, the album was certified Gold in the United States for sales exceeding 50,000 units. That’s what you call fast!
And stepping on the gas even more, El Compa Chuy recently debuted his new single from his next album! The song is called “Al Nuevo Altata” and it’s one of his most recent musical creations. “Al Nuevo Altata” is a rhythmic and happy song that insinuates many things. It’s the first single from El Compa Chuy’s forthcoming album Gente Peligrosa (Dangerous People), which goes to retail October 20. This prolific artist will give corrido lovers a new batch of interesting songs to enjoy.
Parribeño is the word that El Compa Chuy uses to define his music. It’s a term of respect to the people who come down from the Sierras of Sinaloa in their huaraches and their sombrero. And his “música parribeña” has become one of the most important currents in Regional Mexican music.

Y aunque es una de las más recientes contrataciones de Sony Music, la verdad es que en muy poco tiempo El Compa Chuy pasó a ser todo un ídolo entre los amantes de la música regional mexicana gracias al gran éxito alcanzado por “El Katch”, el primer sencillo de ‘El Niño de Oro’: su primer disco con Sony Music y un verdadero fenómeno musical dentro del género.
La vena musical y artística de El Compa Chuy le viene de familia. Cuenta que su bisabuelo (abuelo de su papá) tocaba el acordeón en la sierra de Durango, y que su propio padre –junto con varios tíos– eran músicos aficionados que alegraban las fiestas.
“Me acuerdo que desde que tenía unos 4 ó 5 años ya oía corridos en mi casa, y me gustaba mucho cantar, pero era muy vergonzoso… Me daba vergüenza que me vieran y que me oyeran cantar”, confiesa entre risas El Compa Chuy.
Cuando tenía 14 años, Jesús compró un equipo de sonido que rentaba para fiestas. Así empezó a entrar en contacto y a relacionarse con el mundo artístico de Culiacán.
“Un día un grupo me rentó el equipo para ensayar, pero se pusieron a ensayar nada más la música, porque el cantante no llegó. Como yo andaba por ahí, cantando bajito todas las canciones, los músicos se dieron cuenta y me dijeron que si podía hacerles el favor de cantar para el ensayo… Así empezó mi carrera como cantante”.
Durante los siguientes siete años –al principio contra la voluntad de sus padres ya que Jesús era demasiado joven– El Compa Chuy fue vocalista de un par de grupos en Culiacán. “Fue en esos años cuando perdí por completo la vergüenza por cantar que tenía de niño”, admite el vocalista.
A los 21 años de edad, Jesús dejó Sinaloa para mudarse a California, donde trabajó en un empaque de calamar. Después se trasladó a Phoenix, Arizona, donde trabajaba en un car wash.
Un día, visitando un famoso swap meet de la ciudad, animado por sus familiares se subió a cantar en un lugar para aficionados. Ahí lo escuchó un señor que tenía una banda musical y lo invitó a cantar esa misma noche con la banda… Él aceptó, pero nunca llegó a cantar con aquel grupo… Antes se topó con un par de muchachos que lo invitaron también a unirse a ellos, para interpretar música sierreña.
Es claro que aquel día la suerte estaba echada para Jesús Alfredo Rodríguez Hernández… El Compa Chuy.
Todo aquello sucedió apenas en el 2005. De entonces a la fecha, la carrera artística de El Compa Chuy ha ido tomando más y más velocidad y fuerza… Alcanzando un punto culminante con el auténtico cañonazo que ha sido “El Katch” entre los amantes de la música regional mexicana, que colocaron el tema entre los primeros 10 lugares de la radio, dentro del género regional mexicano.
Sin duda, este cantante de corridos con letras controvertidas, que define el estilo de su música como “parribeño” –en recuerdo a la gente que baja de la sierra de Sinaloa con huaraches y sombrero– se ha convertido en una de las fichas importantes de Sony Music en el género de música regional mexicana.
Admirador de lo original y lo romántico, El Compa Chuy agradece a Dios, a su familia, a su representante y a Sony Music la confianza que han tenido en él y asegura que no les va a fallar.
“Estoy muy preocupado por todas estas cosas tan feas que se han estado dando en el ambiente de la música grupera. Yo admiré mucho a Valentín Elizalde (†) y la verdad no se me hace justo que pasen estas cosas. Yo le pido a la gente que no confunda las cosas… Que se pongan en nuestro lugar. Que piense que nosotros también somos padres, hijos y hermanos”. Finaliza El Compa Chuy con un gesto evidente de preocupación y tristeza.
