Reik

Biography

Reik’s musical life has been characterized by secure and steady steps. Since the beginnings of their career over more than 5 years ago, up to this date, greeting us with their third studio album titled “Un Día Más”, they have known that with clearer objectives, come greater accomplishments. And they keep on track, with fresh ideas and basic rhythms creating more appealing and contagious music.

Jesús, Bibi y Julio offer an enriched phonographic material acting as co-writers in 9 out of the 11 songs that make up this album, reflecting their maturity and growth as human beings, artists, musicians and composers.

“The sound of this album is fresher and more spontaneous, and I think it carries the same strength and freshness of our first release, but with the fact that you can notice our growth starting from the way we perform up to the way Jesús sings and the way in which we cope as musicians” says Julio.

The creators of hits such as “Noviembre Sin Ti” and “Que Vida la Mía” assure their new musical production reflects a more positive aspect of their growth. “Un Día Más” is much lighter than the two previous albums, or even, I could say, it resembles more to the first one in its sound, although the lyrics are much more mature, more focused; we took a long time to work in them because we needed to. The songs are more cheery and simple; let’s say that we wanted to express the celebration that is our career and the opportunities we have been blessed with. It sounds different; they have more rhythm and are way more intense. I believe we recovered the focus of the first album, which was to have fun with our music. We walked away from the heartbreak, sadness and suffering to project a more positive attitude” details Bibi.

The trio formed in Mexicali is already making waves on the radio with “Inolvidable” the first single of the album recorded in Argentina, under the wing of musical producer Gerardo “Cachorro” López. This song, and all the others which make up this album, will be displayed to their public in a way few bands have the opportunity to present their music, with a 300 concert tour live throughout the entire continent, starting this November.

After witnessing the quality of work by the Argentinean musician/producer with other stars, such as Julieta Venegas, Reik got curious about the possible outcome of working along such a talented producer. “It was a very open collaboration because that’s the way “Cachorro” is, free spirited. He is neither methodical nor spontaneous; he allows you to break schemes and preexistent structures. He gives you a lot of freedom and guidance as well, he has a lot of experience in the field, it was as if we were working with a guide who would tell us what was the best in matters of interpretation, sound and experimentation”, explains Jesús.

The three members comment that after their debut material, Reik, and the subsequent album “Secuencia”, the search process for a sound more related to their age, likes, curiosity and interest, got to them in the most natural way.

Their vocabulary is more ample, their sounds more vast, their musical coping capacity is more agile, their interpretative instinct is more developed and their scenic projection is more secure. “This production is the same as what we used to do 5 years ago, but the difference is that each time, we are even more recharged, we fill ourselves of a more subtle and intense energy, of the kind that you can barely feel, but its transmitted immediately. To tell you the truth we have learned to tolerate ourselves more, to be more patient. I am convinced that having the same goals, the same dreams that focus on growing as musicians and always going forward, is what keep us together” highlights Bibi.

Among the new creations the trio composed for “Un Día Más”, available in stores on September 30th, we find “Fui”, “Piel de Ciudad”, “No Desaparecerá” and “Voy a estar”. They say that the process of writing the songs, selecting themes, picking the right chords, talking about ideas with the producer and to think what it might sound like was a very enriching experience for them.

They composed about 50 songs of which they picked those which would stay in the album because in the end you have to choose the ones which describe your current state of mood the best. “That’s how songs and music are, we have to include the ones that are more sensible to the way we are” says Julio. “Even though you plan something, when you are creating a song, you understand that it starts to take its own life, and enjoys itself by the pure fact of its creation, whether it stays or not in the album”, adds Bibi.

Jesus Navarro in the vocals, Julio Ramirez in the acoustic guitar and Gilberto “Bibi” Martínez in the electric guitar have already paved their way as a band. They have already been nominated for a Latin Grammy and were favorites for the MTV Video Music Awards Latin America 2005. Their songs have been heard all over the United States, Mexico and the rest of Latin America.

Since their beginning, until now, Jesus has made of his voice, a characteristic seal for the group. “To put my voice in the songs always leaves me kind of expecting, because after all, it’s what gives the song its characteristic seal. The performance is everything and must be in perfect harmony with the music or it won’t work. It’s an enormous responsibility to do it and I believe we have achieved harmony as a group when making music, I carry the voice, but without the music it’s useless”, asserts Jesús.

The path Jesús, Julio and Bibi undertook over 5 years ago has made them fuse themselves more and more as a group and as friends. Their ideas are clearer. They are more concise in their opinions. Their trust is such that they are not afraid of constructive criticisms which may sometime seem a little destructive.

In “Un Día Más”, relates the trio, there is no necessity to explain what is that they did because the music speaks for itself: The verses, the paragraphs, the refrains, the inputs and the outputs.

Jesús will always project a sweeping personality, of strong character, very secure of himself because he always knows what he wants, with a very fine black humor, he’ extremely funny, he’s ironic, likes going to parties, with lots of artistic veins we find a in a big contrast with his nervous, incessant, explosive and in some cases impulsive personality.

Bibi is characterized for being relaxed, introverted, reserved and quiet but very analytical and thoughtful. He likes to have things planned and go by them.

And Julio, without a doubt, is the one that does not allow average terms because he is intense, enthusiastic, with an extremist personality, always smiling, the comedian of the group, talkative by nature and always looking out for details, sometimes distant but always dreamy.

Just as they are, they show themselves in this new studio album… REIK discovers itself in “Un Día Más”
